Embarking on something new and difficult is always a challenge. By stretching ourselves we keep life interesting, I certainly felt in need of this after the year we have just had. I however underestimated how much being met with incredulity and a certain amount of ridicule would undermine my self-confidence. Sometimes, it seems that it doesn't take much to make me feel like a 5 year old again: being laughed at by the other kids in class, all because I used a German word instead of a Dutch word. (but that is another story). This time the laughter and ridicule was because of the pre-conceived ideas most of us have around ballet.
Determined. not to be defeated I however stuck to my guns, I immersed myself in the technicalities of how the body is used in ballet. I started to learn how to stand and move like a ballet dancer. The time has come to unleash our inner ballerina!

Basic Ballet positions, postures and moves are very hard - no doubt about it. Ballet moves are however the perfect exercise for ageing bodies. What better way is there to improve your posture, balance and core strength? We will most likely not be doing the splits and elaborate arabesques just yet but we will build muscles and strength we did not know we had. We will have a lot of fun doing it and all feel a lot better for it!
